This document is an agreement on measures to reduce the risk of outbreak of nuclear war between the U.S. and the Soviet Union. The nine articles of this document are measures taken to prevent any misinterpretations of any accidental or planned nuclear and other explosive detonations. It also states that each party is required to notify the other of any missile launch in the direction of the opposite party. These are very simple but very important terms to maintain whatever peace there was between these countries at that point and time.
This agreement was very important for both sides because thanks to everything going on with the cold war, tension and resentment were very high. The tension was so severe that any detonation at any time could cause a "hot war." This was a great concern especially after the Cuban Missile Crisis about a decade before. Both parties realized that a nuclear war would lead to nothing but mass destruction and the loss of millions of lives on both sides.

In 1964, there were reports that North Vietnam had attacked U.S. ships on the Gulf of Tonkin. Following this event, Congress passed a law called Gulf of Tonkin Resolution which gave President LBJ the power to take action against any attacks on American forces in Vietnam. Only two senators had disagreed with the joint resolution. This resolution became the subject of political controversial in the course of the undeclared war that followed. As a result of Congress' approval, both President Johnson and later President Nixon relied on the resolution as the legal groundwork for their military policies in Vietnam.

Christian Right was a term used for "mega" conservative right-winged political groups. They attempted to create a link between their beliefs in Christianity and politics. This was most evident during the presidency of Reagan as he attempted to accumulate Christian principles in to the political world he lived in.
Reagan, during his presidency, promoted a lot of principles in Christianity that past presidents did not. This was also shown through the court case Roe v. Wade-- where they danced around the legality of abortion. Soon after the court case it was legalized... This time period is parallel to the 20's as they pranced around the ideas of the Bible and how much it really matter to the government. After all, there is a policy ordering for the "separation of church and state". |
