Unit 5:
Trigger Words:
This political cartoon portrays child labor during progressive era. The children, and possibly a woman, are pulling the wagon that the adults are pleasurably riding on. The adults even have alcohol and rocking chairs, which just adds to the lazy aura of them. The fat cats get an easy ride while the children struggle.
The cartoon exemplifies the pains of child labor, and how exploited they were. The fat and lazy business owner can save tons of money by hiring children, because they will work for so much cheaper than adults. The fat cats get an easy ride while the children struggle. The jobs that children had to do were so dangerous and tedious, that most of them would probably actually rather pull their bosses around town like this, instead of doing their actual jobs.

This excerpt from Riis' book explains and paints a picture in the readers head about the living conditions of poor people, most of them immigrants. These people came to the city to get an industrial job. Because many people migrated into the city this caused a major housing problem. Landlords insisted in dividing the people's apartments into smaller units. These conditions were horrible, bad and tough because men, women and children had to work seven days a week from early morning until nighttime. The workers had family depending on them to provide with the money earned.
This is significant because it showed people how the poor were living and how they struggled to maintain a family. Because of these specific details it helped start a new form of reporting called "muckraking" which latter led to the reform movement to improve these conditions.

"A Chattering Nuisance"
This cartoon represents the conservative Democratic views. This cartoon makes fun of Bryan as "A Chattering Nuisance", a parrot that continually screeches the same hackneyed lines about free silver and other populist "Dead Issues" to the horror of the elderly Miss Democracy.
This is significant because it considers Bryan's advocacy of free silver and other populist reforms as threatening to the nation's economic prosperity and political stability. The Great Commoner's plan had been a sad failure in the two previous election years.
